Laura Track, Yoga Outreach Board Chair
Laura Track, Board Chair
Laura Track’s two greatest inspirations are the practice of yoga and the ideals of social justice. To her, Yoga Outreach represents the perfect union of the two. Laura has been practicing yoga for over 10 years, and obtained her teacher’s certification in 2008. Inspired by the transformative and healing influence of yoga in her own life, Laura has always sought to share yoga with those around her and has been volunteering as a yoga teacher with the YWCA since 2009. Laura became involved with Yoga Outreach in 2007 and is thrilled to deepen her engagement with the organization as the incoming Board Chair.

A qualified lawyer, Laura also seeks to use her education and skills to advance social justice, equality, and human rights through her work. She has worked with the Pivot Legal Society, a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to using the law to advance the interests of marginalized populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness and poverty in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. As well as West Coast LEAF (Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund), an organization whose mission is to achieve equality by changing historic patterns of systemic discrimination against women through BC-based equality rights litigation, law reform and public legal education. She currently works as a staff lawyer for the BC Civil Liberties Association.

Shannon Piedt - Yoga Outreach Board Secretary
Shannon Piedt, Board Secretary
With a degree in Child and Youth Care, Shannon’s first career was as a youth worker in non-profit settings. She then went on to work in a hospital environment as a research manager, where she gained experience writing and coordinating research grant applications. On the side, she has been teaching hatha yoga to people of all shapes and sizes  in community centres and living rooms for over 12 years. As her kids got older and a little extra time became available, she wanted to find a volunteer commitment that was a good fit with her skills and passions. She learned that Yoga Outreach was seeking a grant writer – a perfect merge! Since then, Shannon has been more and more intrigued by the Yoga Outreach approach and the amazing service being offered by YO. This prompted her to attend the Yoga Outreach Core Training™ and join the Board in September 2014. Believing in the value of contribution, Shannon is looking forward to serving YO any way that she can.

Ashley Kearns, Treasurer

Ashley’s passion has always been to seek fairness and positive outcomes by examining the numbers. This led her to pursue a Master’s degree in economics, a career as an economist/regulator, many data-related volunteer stints, and now the position of YO’s treasurer. Ashley completed her Hatha and Yin Yoga Teacher Trainings in 2014 after a series of health issues led her to seek out new outlets for learning and deepening her practice. When she isn’t busy regulating the financial sector, Ashley can often be found on her mat, using yoga asana and breathe work to help balance a hectic modern lifestyle and manage chronic illness. Ashley believes that yoga should and can be accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical or financial circumstances, and has seen how yoga can allow people to transform their lives.

Jennifer Lam

Jennifer Lam, Events Advisor
Jennifer is most passionate about designing a life with purpose and meaningful impact.  She is driven by the vision of others and contributing to its fruition through the creation of memorable experiences in her work as an event coordinator.  After 10 years in the industry she wanted to contribute her professional skills to an organization working with trauma-informed individuals.  With her own journey to healing through yoga, she is inspired by the work Yoga Outreach does to provide access for everyone to yoga and yoga related programs.  Jennifer has been practicing yoga for 10 years and completed her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in 2016. She believes yoga is essential in today’s busy lifestyle and its practice a means to not only healing, but also access to spreading more positive, impactful missions.

Jennifer has travelled extensively and worked internationally, having lived in England, China, and Taiwan.  She draws on her lessons from her travels, work, and her values in health and wellness to connect with the community. Jennifer believes developing informative, memorable, and unique experiences are just some of the ways to increase awareness of the wonderful work done by Yoga Outreach and looks forward to serving the organization.

We would also like to extend our gratitude to retiring Chair Beth Sampson for over a decade of service to Yoga Outreach and wish her luck in her airstream as she travels America!
