Embodiment & Social Justice: An Inclusive Yoga Training

This complement to the Yoga Outreach Core Training™ is for those interested in examining the social issues that give rise to and result from trauma. In this program participants will learn about bringing yoga to specific populations, the importance of a trauma informed approach to the teacher/student relationship and how yoga can be an expression of activism. Participants will explore:

  • Polyvagal theory
  • Spiritual Bypassing
  • Yoga as Activism
  • Yoga & Sexual Assault
  • A Trauma Informed Approach to the Teacher/Student Relationship
  • Yoga & Eating Disorders
  • Yoga for Neurodivergent Folx
  • Practical Approaches to Addressing Cultural Appropriation: Sanskrit Appreciation & Pronunciation for Yoga Teachers


Each module is richly supported with current readings and recordings from thought leaders in the fields of trauma theory, Yoga, and social activism.

We highly recommend that you attend this training synchronously (in real time) as it is not designed to be taken asynchronously (watching a recording after the live session). If you cannot attend live, recordings will be provided.

In order to receive a certificate of completion for this training, attendees must complete all of the sessions and reflection questions within 14 days of the last day of the training to receive a certificate of completion. 

There is no pre-requisite for this course however we recommend that participants have taken the Yoga Outreach Core Training™ and/or have a foundation in trauma-informed yoga theory and techniques.

MODULE 1: TRAUMA INFORMED YOGA REVIEW, POLYVAGAL THEORY

  • Refresh & refine trauma-informed Yoga tools and techniques learned in the Yoga Outreach Core Training™
  • Explore Post Traumatic Growth and Survivors Mission as it relates to Yoga Outreach students and to us.
  • Deepen our understanding of the importance of teacher regulation and relationship in yoga.

MODULE 2: SPIRITUAL BYPASSING
Sashah Rahemtulla

  • Define and discuss spiritual bypassing and how it shows up in our own lives and the larger yoga community.
  • Consider ways in which to identify and avoid spiritual bypassing

MODULE 3: YOGA & EATING DISORDERS
Desi Omojokun

In this session, participants will explore how yoga may be used as a therapeutic tool in eating disorder recovery. Participants will be led through a practice that includes meditation, breathwork and movement that focuses on an approach that can be used to support the recovery of individuals with eating disorders.

  • Understand what an eating disorder is.
  • Understand some challenges that yoga may bring to eating disorder recovery.
  • Learning how yoga can be used as a therapeutic tool in eating disorders.

MODULE 4: YOGA & SEXUAL ASSAULT
Laurel Mackay

The effects of sexual assault are far-reaching into the physical, psychological, emotional, social and relational lives of survivors, so there is value in offering a  yoga space that encompasses a holistic approach and embraces this complexity and dimensionality. In this course, participants will learn how to create safer yoga spaces for survivors of sexual assault.

  • Understanding of what sexual assault is and how there are survivors in every space we enter.
  • Understand how sexual assault impacts survivors and what might be supportive in   healing.
  • Understand why/how yoga might be supportive to survivors in reclaiming a sense of safety in their body and how teachers can offer this.

PEER GROUP LEARNING CIRCLE I

Students will discuss  ideas and reflections based on learning so far in their peer groups.

MODULE 5: A TRAUMA INFORMED APPROACH TO THE STUDENT/TEACHER RELATIONSHIP
Mélanie Ruffié

In this workshop, we will be exploring a trauma-informed approach to the teacher-student relationship, by firstly understanding the role of lineage and tradition in yoga. We will consider the themes of cultural appropriateness, appreciation, and respect and will delve into yoga and positive leadership. We will discuss the bond of trust and safety between a teacher and a student, as well as the responsibilities of both in a context of healing through the Pancha Maya Kosha model.

  • Honoring yoga as tradition and cultural appropriateness: appreciation and respect and connecting to your lineage of teachers that came before
  • Yoga and positive leadership: the importance of the teacher’s yoga practice and Leading by example
  • Yoga and Healing: Creating a bond of trust and safety, Power dynamics, Healing from within and Empowering the student
  • Becoming a skilled yoga teacher through the Pancha Maya Kosha Model and Understanding the interconnections and ripple effects

MODULE 6: YOGA FOR NEURODIVERGENT FOLX

Colonialism perpetuates an ableist view of mental health. This perspective permeates contemporary western yoga classes making them unsafe spaces for neurodivergent folx. Research into neurodivergence (the presence, or grouping, of less-typical, cognitive variations) is also rooted in a patriarchal worldview which enforces a gap in understanding experiences like autism. This will be a somatically based learning environment. Yes, there will be slides (lol) but space and time will be given to experience an approach to yoga that makes space for people who experience the world in such a way that they are diagnosed as living with autism, ADD/HD, sensory processing disorder, bipolar, depression, anxiety, etc.

  • What does neurodivergence mean to you?
  • How does intersectionality impact BIPOC neurodivergent bodies?
  • How do constructs such as gender and race affect how we view neurodivergence and who gets access to support/resources?
  • Experience space for connection and discussion.
  • Receive resources and tools to go deeper and broaden your understanding of neurodivergence
  • Explore how to “de-ableize” your yoga practice, your worldview and the space you hold for students, clients and community.

MODULE 7: PRACTICAL APPROACHES TO ADDRESSING CULTURAL APPROPRIATION: SANSKRIT APPRECIATION & PRONUNCIATION FOR YOGA TEACHERS

  • As yoga teachers we grow to realise that the somatic and sound practices have a direct impact on shifting old  patterns that do not serve us anymore. It helps release suppressed unresolved emotions that block us from clear seeing. Intoning sanskrit correctly supports this process. We will go through the Sanskrit Alphabets and their pronunciation. How each of the sets of sounds create resonance in different parts of us allowing prana to flow better. By taking the time to become aware of these nuances we will not only be showing respect for the science of yoga but will also impact ourselves positively.
  • Appreciation of Sanskrit, including tonality, alphabet, precision in pronunciation and how Sanskrit is vibrational medicine
  • Explore commonly mispronounced words that every yoga practitioner should know about. 
  • Understand full body sounds and their impact on us
  • Learn to chant the pranava om correctly 
  • Practice face, throat, eye and tongue movements to allow for greater resonance within.
  • Learn to pronounce words in Yoga and Ayurveda vocabulary

MODULE 8: YOGA & ACTIVISM
Harmeet Kaur Mann

In Yoga & Activism, we will co-create a space to reflect on how Yoga practice is connected to a desire to create a better world. Participants will learn how to use self-study or Svadhyaya to move in a way that invites awareness. We will explore how systemic oppression shows up in Yoga in the West. This workshop will provide an opportunity to compassionately lean into discomfort together by inviting in our humanity and insight. We will step into challenging conversations to cultivate tools to sustainably interrupt harm through Yoga ethics and through self-regulation techniques.

  • Explore how to compassionately lean into discomfort
  • Learn about how Yoga and activism are interconnected
  • Understand how to sustainably interrupt systemic oppression in the Yoga 
  • Consider defensive barriers and how to move past them

There are a limited amount of slots for classes offered at the middle and lower end of the scale. Please be mindful that if you purchase a price at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher ticket prices, you are limiting access to those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility. Being honest with yourself and your financial situation when engaging with sliding scale practices grows strong and sustainable communities. Tier 1

The highest dollar amount reflects the true cost of the class. Choose this option if you:

  • have access to financial security
  • own property
  • have personal savings
  • are able to pay for “wants”
  • spend little time worried about securing necessities in your life

Tier 2

The middle cost acknowledges that paying the full cost would prevent some folks from being able to attend. If you are:

  • struggling to conquer debt or build savings
  • have access to steady income
  • not spending most of your time thinking about meeting basic needs such as food, shelter, medical care, child care

Tier 3

The lowest cost represents a deliberate opportunity to welcome participation from folks who lack financial resources. If you:

  • struggle to maintain access to needs such as health care, housing, food, child care,
  • are living paycheck to paycheck
  • are in significant debt, you probably belong here


Scholarship & Work-study Option 

Scholarships are available for those who face financial barriers to attend this training. PLEASE NOTE: Due to demand if you reside outside of British Columbia you will only be considered for a scholarship if you are engaged in working with marginalized communities. Your reference letter should provide confirmation of this.

There are two kinds of scholarships available:

Workstudy scholarships are for those who are able to pay a portion of the tuition (usually $180) and do some volunteer hours (not teaching yoga) ahead of the training. Typically this depends on your skills, availability, and what we need at the time. 100% scholarships are for those who do not have the financial resources to attend. These spaces will be prioritized for folks who have a deep interest in bringing this work to impacted communities. We encourage BIPOC and/or LGBTQ2SIA+, immigrant, and refugee folks, as well as those with a diversity of experience including but not limited to ability, mental illness, and/or neurodiversity to apply.

Application Deadline for scholarships are 45 days prior to date of the course. You will be notified as soon as the scholarship committee has made a decision, approx. 30 days before the training. Approved workstudy applicants must complete volunteer commitment prior to attending the training.

Applicants with the following will be prioritized:

  • Keen interest in working with marginalized folks
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Applicants with current involvement, whether paid or volunteer, within the communities we serve.

At least one scholarship space/training will be reserved for BIPOC and/or LGBTQ2SIA+ folks. We also encourage those with a diversity of experience including but not limited to ability, mental illness, and/or neurodiversity to apply.

Refund Policy

Training tuition is refundable, less a 15% administration fee, up to 21 days prior to the training start date. Notice of cancellation must be received in writing via training@yogaoutreach.com to receive a refund. No refunds will be issued within the 21 days prior and fees is non-transferable.
