Learn how to cope better with stress and anxiety on the job and afterwards. No yoga experience necessary.

If you’re a first responder, social worker, healthcare professional, or teacher, you may benefit from additional tools for managing anxiety and stress. The techniques we share are simple to learn, and easy to do with clients, with students, or with your colleagues. No yoga experience necessary.

Why Yoga?

Research shows that yoga, and other body-based practices, are extremely effective at increasing a person’s ability to self-regulate, co-regulate (share a sense of calm with others), and feel safe in their bodies. Having the ability to tune in to your body’s signals is useful far beyond a yoga session or class. Practitioners report an increased ability to manage stress and emotions in daily life, using techniques learned initially in a trauma-informed yoga class.

About Yoga Outreach

Yoga Outreach is Canada’s expert in Service Yoga and trauma informed yoga delivery, offering programs for adults and youth living with mental illness, addiction, poverty, violence, trauma, and imprisonment. It has been serving the community since 1996, and currently supports facilities throughout BC.

Our facilitators are highly-educated trauma and yoga therapists with extensive experience working with first responders, mental health facility staff, and survivors of trauma.

About Trauma-Informed Yoga

Trauma-informed yoga is unique in that it focuses on sensation instead of alignment or performance of forms. Participants are encouraged to adapt, or even opt out of postures, based on the needs of their own body on a particular day. Evidence shows that a choice and sensation-based practice can help survivors of trauma to regain a sense of control and safety in their bodies and lives.

Sliding Scale
$450 – $0

Work-study Option for up to 50% off tuition
Work-study involves a trade in labour in exchange for up to 1/2 off the cost of the training. Please complete our online form. Applications must be completed 1 month prior to the training in order to allow adequate time to complete volunteer hours prior to attendance.

Refund Policy
Training tuition is refundable, less a 15% administration fee, up to 21 days prior to the training start date. Notice of cancellation must be received in writing via training@yogaoutreach.com to receive a refund. No refunds will be issued within the 21 days prior and fees is non-transferable.

Tier 1 – The highest dollar cost reflects the true cost of the class. It is the cost that we would charge all students in the absence of a sliding scale. If you have access to financial security, own property or have personal savings, you would not traditionally qualify for sliding scale services. If you are able to pay for “wants” and spend little time worried about securing necessities in your life, you have economic privilege and power in our community. This price is for you.

Tier 2 – The middle cost reflects the practitioner’s acknowledgement that paying the full cost would prevent some folks from being able to attend, but who do not honestly find themselves reflected in either descriptions for the highest cost or the lowest. If you are struggling to conquer debt or build savings or move away from paycheck to paycheck living but have access to steady income and are not spending most of your time thinking about meeting basic needs such as food, shelter, medical care, child care, etc., you belong here. If you, however, can ask others for financial support, such as family members, partners, or friends, please consider using those personal resources before you use the resources of the sliding scale and limit opportunities for others.

Tier 3 – The bottom cost represents an honest acknowledgment by the teacher and practitioner that there are folks whose economic circumstances would prevent them from being a part of classes if there was not be a deliberate opportunity made for them to access services at a cost that is reflective of their economic realities. If you struggle to maintain access to needs such as health care, housing, food, child care, and are living paycheck to paycheck or are in significant debt, you probably belong here and you deserve a community that honours your price as equal an economic offering as the person who can pay the highest tier. Even when the lower tier is still prohibitive, we will work with folks to offer extended payment plans and other solutions.

Workstudy scholarships are for those who are able to pay a portion of the tuition (usually $180) and do some volunteer hours (not teaching yoga) ahead of the training. Typically this involves research, taking photos, attending an event to help out – it really depends on your skills, availability and what we need at the time.

100% scholarships are for those who do not have the financial resources to attend. These spaces will be prioritized for folks who have a deep interest in bringing this work to impacted communities.

At least one scholarship space/training will be reserved for BIPOC and/or LGBTQ2SIA+ folks. We also encourage those with a diversity of experience including but not limited to ability, mental illness, and/or neurodiversity to apply.

Since 2004, Nicole has taught therapeutic yoga classes and offered individual sessions to trauma survivors, teaching them healthy self-regulation strategies to empower them to live connected and embodied lives. Nicole also trains yoga and healthcare professionals in the trauma-informed yoga theory and techniques. In 2009, she was awarded a master’s degree with a specialization in yoga therapy from Lesley University in Boston, MA. From 2008 – 2017 Nicole served as Director of Therapeutic Yoga Programming for the Provincial Health Services Authority at their Burnaby Centre for Mental Health and Addictions and at Riverview Hospital, where she developed and delivered a comprehensive yoga therapy program for in-patient clients in various stages of recovery from mental health and addiction issues. From 2009 – 2018 she taught at Onsite, the rehab arm of North Americas first safe injection site in Vancouver’s downtown east side.

At present, in addition to maintaining a private practice working with public safety personnel at Boreal Wellness, Nicole is a program director and teacher trainer with Yoga Outreach. She provides trauma informed yoga programming to the residents at Deborah’s Gate, a program serving women who have been trafficked into situations of sexual and/or labor exploitation and Tupper Nova, a day treatment program for youth who have serious mental health concerns. She is a Certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) and a member of Bridge for Health and the Breathe Network which connects survivors of sexual violence with healing arts practitioners.
